Well, that was an exhilarating start to Song of the Week 2020.

More than 1,100 votes were cast in perhaps our wildest #SOTW poll ever, but in the end it was Pelvis Costello’s nomination of The Voidz’ “Did My Best” that took home the year’s inaugural crown. And Pelvis did it in historic fashion, mounting a comeback that few of us thought possible after Bombay Bicycle Club’s “I Can Hardly Speak,” nominated by Julie Kramer, jumped out to a commanding lead after several hundred votes were cast.

But while BBC RT’d the Twitter poll twice, it was Voidz fans who roared the loudest and propelled their track, and Pelvis, to victory. Hear Pelvis’ victory speech when she’s back on air Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.

Of course, the chase for the crown wasn’t the only hotly contested thing at stake this week. A new feature we’ve added for 2020 is that the 4th place finisher each week gets relegated and has to sit out for the following poll. It was truly a race to the bottom between Tommy O’Connor and his pick of The Front Bottoms’ “Camouflage” and Michael Marotta and his nom of Kid Violet’s “Sex On Drugs.” In the end, O’Connor finished last, by a single percentage point, and therefore he will sit out next week’s SOTW.

Life moves pretty fast.

A new poll goes live Monday on Morning Glory.
